Coreen's visit to Mumbai

Earlier this year, Magic Bus UK's Office Manager travelled to Mumbai for the first time, to see Magic Bus work first hand:

“Having worked as the office manager for Magic Bus UK for 5 years, it was with great excitement that I boarded a flight to Mumbai in March, my first ever time to India, to finally see first-hand our work in action there. Everyone I have spoken to about visiting India warns about the assault on the senses but I’m not sure anything could prepare me for the sights, sounds, smells and frenetic energy that greeted me when I arrived!

The next day I accompanied Parvati (Training manager with Magic Bus India) to a session at the Darukhana community, where Magic Bus have run sessions for over 15 years. The session was lead by Vanita (Training & Monitoring Officer with Magic Bus India) and attended by around 25 children, all looking very smart in their Magic Bus t-shirts. The session comprised 2 activities and I was invited to take part in both. Needless to say I was by far the worst in both activities (I blame the heat!), much to the children’s amusement! The session rounded off with a discussion linked to the activities around working hard and not giving up – it was exam time for the children so a very relevant message.

After the session, I accompanied Parvati and Vanita on a visit in the community to see where the children lived and meet some of the parents. I was struck by the density of people and lack of space. The only free space was next to the dirty water of the Bombay Port Trust industrial harbour and it was covered in rubbish and washed up plastic. Walking around the community and seeing how these children live and the reality of their daily lives made the children I had met all the more inspiring.

The Magic Bus sessions give the children a chance and a safe place to play and they really embrace that opportunity – they turn up on time, they listen and are respectful towards the trainers, they eagerly participated in the wrap up discussions and they so obviously enjoyed the activities because at the end of the day, no matter where they come from, kids just want to be kids.”
